Bright Futures For Mobile Phones In Healthcare

6th March 2008

Unbound Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have launched Bright Futures for Mobile Devices - this will enable clinicians and trainees to access the AAP’s comprehensive and practical pediatric health guidelines directly on their PDA or smartphone.

Bright Futures for Mobile Devices includes both the third edition of Bright Futures Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children and Adolescents and the Bright Futures Pocket Guide. More than 50 experts in pediatrics, family medicine, public health, dentistry and mental health contributed to content that was reviewed by 1,000 health professionals, parents, and child advocates. The Bright Futures project was initiated in 1990 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB).

”The time allotted for a well-child visit is all too brief,” said Mark Hormann, MD, FAAP, of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Center, Houston. “Having a mobile version of Bright Futures on my handheld device helps me stay on top of everything I need to cover—developmental milestones, immunizations, age appropriate screening and counseling for patients and parents.”

“We’re pleased to be able to deliver important child development guidelines and health supervision standards directly at the point of care,” said Maureen DeRosa, Director, Department of Marketing and Publications at the AAP. “Bright Futures for Mobile Devices can provide child health professionals with the tools they need to ensure optimal health care for children from birth through the teen years.”

“Bright Futures for Mobile Devices is a practical way to bring this preventive care initiative from the AAP and HRSA right into every day practice,” added Bill Detmer, MD, President and CEO of Unbound Medicine. “Pediatricians and policy makers will now have a powerful and convenient tool to support families and promote healthy development in ways the Bright Futures Guidelines emphasize.”

Using Bright Futures for Mobile Devices, clinicians can link directly from age-based visit summaries in the Pocket Guide to comprehensive strategies for anticipatory guidance and preventive care. Unbound Medicine’s powerful platform includes intuitive navigation tools, links to related information and bookmark capability and is compatible with all current smartphones and handheld devices using the Windows Mobile or Palm operating systems.
