Mobile picture phone technology is compelling and easy to acquire. A clinician can simply walk into a high street store and purchase a handset and the network services required to support a basic wireless PACS application. This has encouraged a great deal of experimentation – much of it without the support of either a vendor or the health provider's own IT department. While some of these experiments may fail, those that succeed will translate into products and services that compete with conventional PACS technology. Already a number of health providers are purchasing wireless enabled imaging products. In this report we examine the wireless medical imaging and PACS market, discuss the impact of a new generation of handset and PDA technology on this market and look at existing and potential applications of wireless imaging within the healthcare sector.
